I work hard for no money!

Posted by Gexx on August 9, 2009

So hard for it, honey!!

I’ve been in the field a few days this past week.  I’m dragging M out on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (yays! MINIONS!)

Today I helped M move his apartment.  He’s moving to the next town over, and he has WAY TOO MUCH FURNITURE!  He bought a full bedroom, living room, and kitchen set when he moved to Knoxville a year ago because he didn’t think he’d be moving.  Well, guess what… he’s moving.  ::sigh::

Perhaps it’s just because I’ve moved thirteen times, but it seems that so many people make moving more difficult than they need to.  I’ve moved each of my boyfriends and I get so frustrated with them.  With J, I packed the entire house in 4 hours (one evening).  It took him more than 2 days (w a Uhaul) to move it across town (the only big furniture was a bed, couch, and diningroom table/chairs).  With A, I cleaned all 2.5 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, living room, and steps in the time it took him to clean his kitchen (which he never used).  Now with M I keep trying to get him to pack stuff up in advance, but instead he ends up waiting to the last minute.  And then when I try to help pack and clean, he instead thinks he’ll let me relax but instead I’m waiting and worrying that he won’t be in good condition for the days he’s helping me in the field.  ::sigh::

Measurements are finished!

Posted by Gexx on July 15, 2009

Yesterday was one of the last times I’ll need to make the 3-4 hour trip to my site and the 3-4 hour trip back because I won’t need the total station (surveying equipment). I need to go out of my way about 1.5-2 hours to get that equipment.

Yesterday M and I grabbed the total station and went to the site, expecting the discovered “mistake” to take all day and then some. Instead, we went through the site and found two points that did not line up for one reason or another. Additionally, the compass I used yesterday, a military compass, states that my grid is neither +20 deg or -20 deg off mag north. Instead it is ON mag north with a variance of +-2 deg from the different datums I used. I needed 5 datums for a 100m x 60m area because of the crazy vegetation (curse you Rhododendrons!!) I think that my other compass, a more simple one, may be off some. What’s really cool is that where I am is the area of 0 declination. Woot! One less thing to calculate. So the next thing to do is get a metal detector, go over the site to see if any metal (specifically ferrous) readings show up, and then I get to dig STPs at each of the 60 points that I set out over the course of the last 6 weeks.

Then I get to start on the lower level, but I’m waiting to hear from the old boss if he can come out and remove some of the big trees that have fallen over the site, threatening to damage extant structures! NOOO!

Field Work

Posted by Gexx on July 7, 2009

Tomorrow I’m dragging M out to the field for what will hopefully be the last mapping expedition. We would be done but I was stupid and recorded that my grid was 20 degrees off of magnetic north. I neglected to write that it was infact NEGATIVE 20 degrees off, so we need to go back tomorrow and try to fix this mess up. After that, I should hopefully be able to run out w the metal detector for one or two days and then start to dig.

stepping back… after x steps forward

Posted by Gexx on February 27, 2009

I have been on the search for my drill bits for days.  I want to make a LED seed starter.

I searched through three tubs of stuff.  You know that stuff, the stuff that accumulates because you don't know where to put it.  I ended up putting it in a series of laundry baskets and tupperware totes.  After I went through them, seperating out what was going to Goodwill, seperating out the paperwork/old mail for further detailed perusal, and finding places for everything else (if it had no place, it was Goodwill), I still had no drill bits.  I was so certain that the bits were in them because that's where I threw everything when my parents visited.  So, no bits.

Onto the next possibility: The dinning room drawers.  This is a set of drawers that came from Justin's parents.  The top drawer is full of catchall stuff, rolls of scotch tape, fuses, lightbulbs, spools of thread, ribbon, dry-erase markers, all that good stuff.  I emptied the drawer into one of the now-free laundry baskets, searching for the drillbits.  They're in a blue nylon book, so it's somewhat obvious.  Still no drillbits.  I take the opportunity to re-pack the drawer.  I use gladware: one for batteries, one for screws and nails, one for fuses, one for sewing stuff.  I stack up all my appliance manuals on one side.  I find places for my tape measure, my screwdriver set, and my hammer.  I take all the random wrenches, pliers, and other hardware and set it aside for it to be brought into the basement.

Then onto the bottom drawer.  This drawer ended up being stuffed so full of stuff that the front was pulled off, leaving the drawer more like a cubbyhole.  One side is stuffed with fabric, which I refolded for the purpose of getting it to fit better.  I ended up finding some lovely brown and blue fabric that I was going to make into my bedroom curtains but I think I'll use for a dress or skirt (depending on how much I have) and some red and cream fabric that was going to be a pillow but will work for another skirt.  They're both rather stiff, but that will be ok.  Working on the other side I pulled out a plethora of other hand tools that migrated up from the basement, and in them was the pack of drill bits!

My first project was to reattach the doors to my kitchen cupboard.  They were taken off when I re-did the kitchen.  I attached the handles and the hinges to both and then carried them to the kitchen.  For some reason I ended up purchasing the wrong style of hinges.  I'm not sure how that happened.  So one project still not done.

Then I wanted to build the seed starter that I had mentioned for last weekend.  I pulled out the tupperwares for it, but for some reason when I bought them, I never checked that the lids fit on the bottoms.  ARGGH!

So needless to say, I'm a little peeved that I can't do what I wanted, but at the same time I'm glad that I was able to clean up those piles of junk.

The weekend

Posted by Gexx on February 24, 2009

This weekend went pretty well, I had a general itinerary and I managed to take care of a chunk of it.

I made the garden plan and bought some seeds for it.  We'll be growing broccoli, kale, tomatoes, peppers, yellow squash, and herbs this year.

I did all my class readings and made French Onion Soup this weekend.

And then tonight I cleaned like nobody's business.

I was planning to make something for my friend's birthday tomorrow, but now I finally check my phone for the first time all day, and apparently her birthday was today and they met for dinner 3 hours ago.

Well, I'll make them over the next few days (it's a multiday process apparently, I'm just doing great here) and get them to her with the appropriate amount of apologies.  Not that she's really talked to me much in the last week anyway.

OH! I had a "gig" on Sat night (which actually had money potential o.O ).  My friend Claire ( ) needed some people to help photograph a big benefit ball.  I took 8+ gigs of photos.  WOW!  It was a big camera with moving parts and like, a lens, and everything.  I needed to focus it and stuff.  I can't wait to see if I managed to get them to come out well.  The party goers were quite amusing as they got drunker.

And now I'm actually going to try to get some sleep.  A good night's sleep.  Wow.

old and new

Posted by Gexx on January 20, 2009

I brought my personal computer into work because my work computer is 4 years old and still running an archaic version of windows and IE.  I wanted to watch the innaugeration, but apparently my personal computer is unable to even *find* the school's wireless system, which my work computer is (obviously) able to connect to.  I went online and followed the directions, but none of them seem to work.
I guess I'll just catch it later.

New Year Resolutions, sorta

Posted by Gexx on December 3, 2008

I don’t really *do* New Year Resolutions. It really makes no sense to me to suddenly decide that you need to change something and actually expect to break all your old, bad habits in one day that culminates the end of the stressful holiday season. Heck, the day after New Years is the national day of recuperation!

But, I do realize that I need to change a few things, and the next month will have plenty of new starts: new semester, new reign administration, new heating system.

So – I am going to propose a few changes to my current way of life. This is not seperate from the 101 in 1001 plan. In fact, it is most likely going to augment it. But I realize that I both need and want a few changes.

I’ve decided to break it into two parts: things I will continue through the year and things I want to get done over winter break.

So within the next month, I will set up the infrastructure for a year of:

  1. Keeping my house as neat/clean as I did from April 2007 – Sept 2007.
  2. Consuming consciously. This entails purchasing from local vendors and responsible companies. This includes food, toiletries, alcohol, cleaning supplies, and gifts.
  3. Successfully gardening at least two food objects (ie: tomatoes and eggplants) and 3 spices/herbs.
  4. Keep my bills organized.
  5. Run .

Over break I will:

  1. Enroll in auto-pay for my mortgage
  2. Figure out what is going on with my ATT bill
  3. Clean my desk
  4. Install my kitchen cabinet doors
  5. Clean out my kitchen supplies
  6. Install my coathooks
  7. Play with my kittens
  8. And generally simplify my possessions
  9. Create my mother’s website
  10. Figure out my financial aid situation for the following year
  11. Mount the headlight on my bicycle
  12. Organize the basement for easy bicycle access
  13. Get Orion and Neci their yearly shots
  14. Spay Orion
  15. Cuddle the kittens
  16. and at the end…. update my 101 in 1001 blog!

Plan plan plan…. Now to just DO!
