You’re why we don’t get to have any nice things

Posted by Gexx on August 29, 2009

This morning I went to the farmer’s market to pick up some last minute stuff for tomorrow.  As an aside, if I knew I wasn’t going to go into the field today, I would have just done all my shopping this morning.

I picked up what I needed and some extras.  I brought home some lovely fresh Chanterelle mushrooms and some gorgeous sunflowers that weren’t on my list.   As soon as I got home I went to get the vase for the sunflowers.  I left the flowers sticking out of my bag.

It was too much temptation for one kitten.  I returned not 3 minutes later to find them with fewer than half their petals and one head ripped right off.

So M and I went to Soccer Taco for lunch, which just happens to be across (and a bit down the road) from the Humane Society of Tennessee Valley. I had been thinking of looking into getting another cat as Orion was not handling the concept of “alone” well, so M and I went on in “just to look.” Over lunch I had been listing the qualities I wanted, if I were to get a new cat: short hair (I don’t like picking out matted poop), playful, young adult, likes to be held, calm, does well with other cats. The HS had a cat colony area, where there were a few adult cats living together, so we walked in and they took notice of us. This one (spoiler, he now lives with me) started playing with us right away. The others weren’t that engaged. He purred when we picked him up, and he kept pouncing on my ragged jeans hem – he filled all my requirements, and he needed a catmomma. Since I now liked a cat, I figured we could look at the other adoption locations, so we went to PetSmart and YoungsWilliams. Neither place had any cats that stood out, much less fulfilled half of my requirements.

So I went home and thought about him. I noticed Orion meowing back and forth at the outside cats, mewing when they walked away. Orion has also put on a large amount of weight since Neci first was sick because they weren’t playing any more. I figured it might be best to introduce a new cat before Orion got too used to being an only, lazy, fat cat.
So the next day we filled out the paperwork and the morning after that (yesterday) they called my vet to make sure Orion was up to date. Then we rushed over to take him home.

When we got home, we put his carrier on the floor and opened the door. Orion did some sniffing, as did he. Then he came out of the carrier and Orion sniffed some more. Orion backed away a little bit, did not puff up, but growled and then hissed. All afternoon Orion kept him in sight and growled. He just wandered and ignored her. At night, she slept by my head and growled while he slept by my feet. This morning she’s going about on her own as is he. When they meet she growls and hisses some, but there’s no physical altercation… yet.

So, he needs a name. The current choices are: Alby, Whittaker, Worely, Remy, Gawain, Theron, and Sven. Ideas?

This past Thursday I got to see Neci. She was in a crate at the vet’s hooked up to an IV. She was so skinny and had patches shaved because of all the tests and bloodworks that she underwent. It took about five minutes before she recognized M or myself. She couldn’t move much because her front paw with the IV was immobilized to keep her from messing with it. After I pet her and gave her chin scruffies for a while, she started to purr very weakly. She had some gunk on her fur as she had just vomited an attempt to give her oral meds.
Her GI cancer was so bad that any treatment would kill her because she was too weak for chemo. Exploratory surgery would put her in shock or cause a bad infection: her immune system was gone. I could leave her at the vet’s on an IV so she could slowly, miserably, and agonizingly waste away. Or I could take her home and she would waste away more painfully and quickly.
I didn’t think that any of those decisions would be fair to her – they all involved drawn-out, painful deaths.
So I had to make a decision which I hated.
After much thinking and much crying, I called the vet’s on Friday morning and Neci was put to sleep that day.

Sick cat and Savannah

Posted by Gexx on May 19, 2009

Morgan and I brought Neci to the vets on Saturday morning. She was only 6 lbs (she was 11 before she got sick the first time in March and lost weight for that, I think she was down to 8 pounds then). She is extremely anemic, lethargic and wasn’t eating. So the vet kept her for the weekend, ran some tests, and kept her on an IV. She’s still there, on an IV. Based on current blood tests, the vet thinks that this is either
1) GI cancer – mast cell tumor in the small intestine, spreading big time
2) autoimmune disease
3) parasites on the red blood cells
Today he is extracting cells to send to the lab to decide wether or not it is cancer.
On Thursday we’ll sit down with him to determine “what we’ll do next.”
I really don’t like the sound of that.
Through this whole issue, I’ve needed to remind the vet that I won’t be in town this weekend.

::sigh:: my poor kitty.

Stupid Cat

Posted by Gexx on March 22, 2009

How stupid can my cat be?

Neci, the one who’s always sick, has decided, while I was gone, to eat a chunk of string. So now she is shitting out a length of string. It’s absolutely disgusting because fecal matter clings to it. I just discovered it this afternoon, so I cut it close to her butt. I heard that pulling on it can just damage the intestines, so I figure I’m up for a few days of poopy string cutting.

Sick Kitten Edition

Posted by Gexx on March 7, 2009

I wanted something sweet for dessert.  I poured myself a glass of scotch.

Look at These

I would order them if they were in my size. But, alas, of all the sizes to be out of, mine is included at the moment.  But perhaps it’s a good thing since I need to watch my finances.  The cool thing about the company here is that they use all reclaimed/recycled materials.  In the area, their stuff is sold at Mast General Store and at some other place out west (go to the simpleshoes site).

So my kitten:
Yesterday I came home and noticed a few spots of watery puke.  I wasn’t too worried since normally after they heave up a hairball, a few seconds later (and in another room) they puke up a thinner batch.  So i went looking for the substantial deposits.  There were none, but I caught Neci in mid puke. It was thin. Then she did it again. And again. And again.  I cleaned them up and picked her up.  She was more cuddly than normal and when I set her down she curled up and chilled.  I figured it was a stomach bug and we would go to the vet the following day if it continued.

That evening she didn’t puke much more, she slept right next to me.  This morning, however, I woke up at 5AM to cat-hacks.  And sure enough, it was the same style of puking.  Then she ran off and I had to check all sorts of hiding places to find her.  About 7AM I got up and got ready. 8AM I had her in the carrier… no drama there so she really must not be feeling well… and we went to the vet’s who opened at 8.30AM.  We sat in the parking lot till they opened and as soon as the door unlocked, we were in.  The vet got to us rather quickly.  She felt around and confirmed what I embarassedly thought was the most probable.

She was constupated.

But to rule out anything else, we were going to have an xray.  Which would also show fecal matter to confirm the constupation diagnoses.  We had the xray and sure enough, there was a whole line of poo from her butt to her stomach.  Poor Kitty!!

The doctor said that we should do an enema, and she offered to keep the kitten for the day so she didn’t “explode” (doctor’s words) in my house.  I took her up on that offer and went to work.  This afternoon I picked her up.  Apparently she hadn’t pooed defecated much, so the doctor warned me she might still “explode” in my house.  Ah well.  If the puking doesn’t change by Monday, we’re to come back in.

So we go home.  And she pukes again.  And again.  And she goes to sleep.  I pick her up and massage her belly to promote the poopage and she stays there for over an hour.  Then she gets up and wanders.  I realize it’s a good time for our 2x daily pill, so I retreive her and we have a battle of wits.  She thought she could spit it out later, but NO! I caught it and covered it in petroleum jelly (their fave snack).  Then we had another fight.  Poor kitten!

When I let her go, she ran off and I didn’t see her agian for hours.  I started to get worried that she slipped outside when my neighbor or when Morgan showed up.  Just now, while typing, she appeared from under my bed and puked on my favorite shoes, my bra, and then somewhere in the other room.  I should probably try to figure this out now.

Poo. both as an imperative and an explitive.

btw – I love Broadway Vet Clinic.  They’ve treated us very well.

same old same old

Posted by Gexx on February 26, 2009

Last night before I went to bed, I refilled the catfood bowl.  It was the last of the food, probably about 3/4 to a full cup worth of food.  I expected it to last through the morning and then I could grab some on my way home from work after they had no food for a few hours.
At 5 AM (7 hours later) I had two whining cats sitting on my chest.  I shoo them off, and try to get some rest but end up pulling out my computer and taking care of some school work.  I crawl out of bed at about 730 AM and find that the piggies gobbled up all their food.
So I'm at work, and I have two portly, hungry kittens left to their own devices at my house.
I hope it still stands when I get home later.

Orion has decided that it is bedtime

Posted by Gexx on January 13, 2009

But I am up reading the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property as I lost time the last two days trying to figure out this computer virus.

I don't mind that I'm reading this.  i love cultural resource law. That's my THANG.  However, when my purring kitty with no belly fur and two unremoved stitches burrows under the blankets (I'm reading in bed) and curls up against my thigh, I feel guilty for keeping her up.  It just seems like it is *now* bedtime.

Neci, on the other hand, has decided that her time is best spent leaping from the edge of the bed onto my new purse that crackles so delightfully because it's made of laminated fabric.

The cats go to the vet on Monday

Posted by Gexx on December 13, 2008

Neci and Orion are set to go to the vet's on Monday for their yearly shots.  Apparently Orion's were due in November, which makes sense now that I think of it.  Neci's were done last December because I adopted her later.  This is all in preparation for Orion's spaying on January 14.  No more will my kitten go into heat.  Her last heat, however, has been a while ago. Maybe she's gotten used to the odd feeling of fertility.

So before I bring the cats in, I want to make sure they look their best: claws trimmed, coats shiney, all cuddly.  So I started with the coats.  Next time, I need to remember to trim their claws *before* I give them their bath.  Orion was ok like normal, but Neci has gotten to hate baths more and more.  Just getting into the bathroom was a difficult experiance.  I think I need to do hers before Orion.

I wish I knew where my camera was (again) because then I could include pictures of them in their shrunken state.
